Getting started with the basics
Starting a car care business does not require a university degree — but it does require expertise, the right products and an understanding of running a business. Here are the most important steps.
Register your business
You need to register as a sole trader or limited company with Companies House. Sole trader is the easiest start — no start-up capital required, and you are personally liable. Once your turnover exceeds the VAT threshold (currently £90,000/year), you must register for VAT.
Certification and training
Although there are no legal requirements for certification in car care, it is a strong competitive advantage. Training and certifications from manufacturers (e.g. Gyeon, IGL, Koch Chemie) signal expertise and give access to better product prices and warranty programmes.
Equipment and premises
Start with the essentials — you do not need a perfect setup from day one. The most important basic equipment includes:
- Polishing machine (rotary and/or dual action)
- Steam cleaner or low-pressure sprayer
- Good LED lighting (critical for polishing)
- Secure product storage
Consider starting in rented workshop space rather than investing in your own premises. Many areas have commercial units available at reasonable prices.
Finding your first customers
Start with your network: family, friends and colleagues. Offer the first cars at a reduced price in exchange for reviews and referrals. Instagram and Facebook are the most important channels for car care — before/after images sell themselves.
Professional setup from day one
Even from day one you should have a professional system for certificates, booking and customer communication. It signals professionalism and saves you hundreds of hours of administration in the long run. That is the investment that separates the hobbyist from the professional.
