Two very different products
Paint Protection Film (PPF) and ceramic coating are often confused, but they work in completely different ways. PPF is a physical, transparent polyurethane film that is adhered directly to the paintwork. Ceramic coating is a chemical layer that bonds to the paint surface and cures into a hard, hydrophobic protective film.
What is PPF?
PPF — also known as stone chip protection or paint film — is a thermoplastic polyurethane film typically 150–200 microns thick. It is nearly invisible, self-healing when exposed to heat, and can absorb impacts from stones, insects and other physical forces without the paintwork being damaged.
PPF is primarily designed to protect against physical impact — stone chips, scratches and abrasion. It is the only real solution if you want to protect the front of your car during motorway driving.
What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic coating is a chemical protective layer that primarily protects against chemical attack — UV radiation, bird droppings, acid rain and road salt. It also adds hydrophobicity so the car is easier to keep clean, and provides a deeper gloss.
Comparison
- Stone chip protection: PPF wins clearly. Coating provides no protection against physical impact.
- Chemical protection: Coating wins. PPF offers some chemical resistance, but coating is superior.
- Gloss: Coating generally provides a deeper, more liquid gloss than PPF alone.
- Price: PPF is significantly more expensive — a full front kit can cost £800–£2,000. Coating starts from £200–£500.
- Durability: Premium PPF lasts 10+ years. Good coating lasts 3–7 years.
Can you combine PPF and coating?
Yes — and it is actually the preferred solution for many car enthusiasts. PPF on the most exposed areas (front, door handles, mirrors), and coating on the rest of the car. Coating can even be applied on top of PPF to add hydrophobicity and make cleaning the film easier.
When do you choose what?
- Do you drive a lot on motorways or are stone chips a concern? → PPF
- Do you primarily want a clean, glossy and chemically protected car? → Coating
- Do you want the ultimate protection and have the budget? → Both
Whatever you choose, a professional certificate is important documentation — both when selling the car and in the event of any warranty claims.
